One of the Corridor which passes through FYROM is The Corridor VIII. It is one of the Pan-European corridors which runs between Durrës in Albania, at the Adriatic coast, and Varna, at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The part of the Corridor VIII is the M2 route which is under construction at the moment. A2 is a route that will connect Kriva Palanka and the Deve Bair border crossing with Bulgaria with Ohrid. The route passes Skopje through the ring-road and enters the already constructed motorway that connects Tetovo with Gostivar. The part of the route that bypasses Kicevo and ends in Ohrid is planned to be turned into a motorway with 4 lanes by 2018. This section is currently under construction and after it will be constructed, it will form part of the A2.

The biggest project ever

The plan is to connect the cities of Kicevo and Ohrid with the 57 km long motorway. Basically, this will be the way to make the transport of passengers and goods easier and faster, and to contribute to the economic and tourist development. The investment for this capital project is estimated at about 375 million euros, which makes it the biggest infrastructural investment in the last 50 years in FYROM. The financing was obtained with a particularly favorable loan of the EXIM Bank from the PR China.

The benefits from the new motorway are: simpler, faster and safer communication among the settlements in the regions of Kicevo, Ohrid and Struga. The speed limit on the new section will be 120 km/hour instead of the current 60 km/hour. According to the design, the new motorway will start at Kicevo, and via Podvis, Preseka and Pesochani arrive at Trebenishta. From there it will connect to Ohrid via Podmolje. It will be a two-lane road, 25.2 m wide motorway, with 6 overpasses and 13 underpasses, as well as a double road tunnel Preseka which will be 2200m long. The construction contractor is the Chinese company “Sinohydro Corporation Limited”, and the plan is to finish the project in 2018.
