Construction of New Motorway Section Demir Kapija-Smokvica is part of the Pan-European Corridor X in the FY Republic of Macedonia. The project for construction foresees the construction of a new, modern motorway section from Demir Kapija to Smokvica with a length of 28.18 km and in accordance with European standards. It is also the most crucial element of the central transport network linking Greece and Austria, connecting Western Balkans with Europe in the north and with the Thessaloniki harbor in the south. It tries to increase transport efficiency and improve traffic safety along the whole route.

In addition, the construction is the biggest EU-funded project in the country and was started in 2013. It will play a role in improving regional integration, reducing transportation costs, save time and allow a faster circulation of vehicles, which will in turn influence positively the transit of persons and goods and increase the trade exchange between countries. Due to the complexity of the terrain for construction works, this project has been assessed as very complex, involving construction of bridges, tunnels, overpasses and road nodes. Construction of 28.18 km of new dual carriageway, including two twin tunnels of a total length of 4.8 km, 6 major river bridges/viaducts, 2 interchanges and 12 overpasses/underpasses, as part of the Pan-European Transport Network. The main axis of the Pan-European Corridor X passing through Macedonia will be completed on a level of motorway with its construction, planned to be finalized in the middle of 2017. Both tunnels will be 1.200m long (per tube) and fully equipped with a state-of-the-art electromechanical plant.

Financing

The section is built by the Greek company Aktor. The total investment for the road section amounts to 257 million euro, out of which 130 million are from the European Investment Bank, 45 million are a grant from EU’s IPA, 170 million have been provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and 6 million have been singled out from state’s budget, thus arising as one of the biggest Macedonian infrastructural investments in the past 20 years. Sub-contractors are Geobrugg (rock support structures) and TOMH (landscaping).  Tunnels T1 and T2 are almost finished; the construction regarding electricity, signing, light, ventilation system etc. is the next and final step for the further 1 year.
